Just in case the big bag is too bulky, we’ve created a smaller bag as well! This bag was intentionally made for rainy seasons, so making it with outdoor/waterproof fabric is highly recommended! Cut out the Fabric

Draw the patterns directly onto the wrong side of a single layer of fabric. Cut out the exterior pieces. Overlock or zigzag stitch all the seams of the back panel, side panel, and zipper panel.

Make the Bag Panel

1) Fold each side of the handle in half towards the center with the wrong sides together.

2) Fold the strap in half lengthwise. Topstitch around the strap 1/8” from the edge. Overlock or zigzag stitch each end of the straps raw seams. Make the other handle in the same manner. Make the other strap in the same manner.

3) Place the handle onto the right side of the exterior bag panel 3” away from the center on each side. (2” for the small bag) When holding the handle, place the handle 1 1/4” (1” for small bag) over the edge of the bottom. Pin and baste onto the seam.

4) Place the bag panel and zipper panel pieces with the right sides together. Pin and stitch the bottom edge of the zipper panel, backstitching at both ends. Leave a 3/8” seam allowance on both ends.

5) Press the seam toward the bag panel piece. Topstitch 1/8” away from the seam. Repeat this process for the other side of the bag panel and zipper panel. Leave a 3/8” seam allowance on both ends.

6) Pin the handle onto the wrong side of the bag panel. Stitch the ends of the handle to the bag panel in a square shape with a cross in it. Repeat for the other end of the handle and the handle on the other side of the bag. (optional)

Attach the Zipper Ends

1) Fold each edge of the zipper end piece inwards 3/8″ and press. Fold in half and press.

2) Place the 10” zipper onto the folded end of the zipper end and baste together.

3) Fold the zipper end piece in half lengthwise with the wrong sides together. Topstitch 1/8” away from the edge, backstitching on both ends. Attach the other zipper end in the same manner.

Sew the Zipper

1) Place the assembled zipper onto the zipper panel bag panel with right sides together. You will be able to see the wrong side of the zipper.

Pin the zipper and zipper panel bottom piece in place. Stitch together, sewing close to the zipper coils. Backstitch on both ends.

2) After sewing the zipper with the zipper panel, flip the zipper so that is facing upwards. Press the seam toward the bag panel. Topstitch 1/8” away from the seam.

3) Pin the other side of the zipper to the other side of the zipper panel with right sides together. Stitch together, sewing close to the coils and backstitching at both ends.

4) Turn the bag right side out. Topstitch the unstitched panel 1/8” from the seam. Leave a 3/8” seam allowance on both ends.

Assemble the Bag

1) Place one end of the strap onto the zipper end of the bag panel. Place the strap 1 1/2” (1 ¼” for small bag) over the edge of the zipper end. Pin and baste in place.

2) Repeat this process for the other side of the zipper end and strap.

3) Place the side piece for the bag panel with right sides together, matching the top center of the side piece and center of the zipper end. Pin and stitch the top seam of the side panel and bag panel together. Leave a 3/8” seam allowance on both ends.

4) Press the seam toward the side panel. Stitch the end of the strap to the side panel in a square shape with a cross in it. Repeat for the other end of the strap.

5) Turn the bag inside out. Place the bottom of the side piece to the bottom of the bag panel with right sides together, matching the bottom center of the side piece and bottom center of the bag panel. Pin and stitch the bottom seam of the side panel and bag panel together. Leave a 3/8” seam allowance on both ends.

6) Pin and stitch the rest of the seams of the side panel with the right sides of the bag panel together using a 3/8” seam allowance.

7) Before stitching, clip of the corner seam of the bag panel.

8) Repeat this process for the other side of the bag panel and side panel. Turn the bag right side out.
